Part of All Hallows Haunts
This talk will explore the history of the Televisual Gothic – programming that uses the Gothic to probe the horrors of the television industry – on the BBC from the 1950s to the present. Ranging from Nigel Kneale’s The Quatermass Experiment (1953) to Paul and Michael Clarkson’s Red Rose (2022), we will survey the use of the Gothic’s subversive potential to expose and criticise modes of television production that serve capitalist ends to the detriment of creatives and audiences alike.
